Product Description

Description
With 1989's BENEATH THE REMAINS, Sepultura began a remarkable four-album streak of bold, innovative thrash metal that is nearly unparalleled in the genre. Here the Brazilian quartet transformed from a promising death metal band into a musical force of nature, with Max Cavalera's gruff, primal vocals and potent rhythm-guitar riffs leading the way for the blistering guitar lines of Andreas Kisser and the crushing rhythms of bassist Paulo Jr. and drummer Igor Cavalera (Max's brother).
Every selection on REMAINS seethes with intensity, particularly the opening title track, which moves from a haunting acoustic-guitar passage to a fierce metallic barrage, and the record's lead single, "Inner Self", which is marked by Igor's pummeling double-bass work and Kisser's searing, technically accomplished solos. Having grown up idolizing bands like Slayer and Metallica, the young members of Sepultura were on the verge of rivaling their heroes with REMAINS. Simply put, this is one of the best--and most consistent--thrash albums ever recorded.
(Note: The 1997 remastered version of BENEATH THE REMAINS features three bonus tracks, including a cover of Os Mutantes' "A Hora E A Vez Do Cabelo Nascer".)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sepultura's legendary breakthrough album, 6 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Prior to 1989 Sepultura had gained a good following in the Worldwide underground metal scene with their second independant release, Schizophrenia. This left sepultura hungry to make a more major impact. Signing to Roadrunner/Roadracer records in late '88 gave them the back-up to unleash their pounding thrash sound onto the World. Beneath The Remains was recorded in Rio in early '89 and was released to rave reviews and really broke Sepultura into the Thrash mainstream. The album was recieved especially well in Europe and comprised of legendary tracks such as Mass Hypnosis and Beneath The Remains. The album displayed technical ability and demonstrated the skillfulness and ferrocity of Igor Cavalera's drumming. This superb album marked a major change in the thrash scene and broke the humble Brazillians into the World Metal scene. This album shows why Sepultura are justifiably Brazil's largest musical export.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing rifforama - 95%, 14 Aug 2004
This is Sepultura's finest hour. The sheer number and quality of riffs is amazing, almost overwhelming at times. If there were two more songs on this album, people would be dropping dead of whiplash.

This is the second of three awesome thrash albums Sepultura released, and just like Schizophrenia that came before it, and Arise after it, it is the first track that is the strongest. "Beneath The Remains" has something like 36 riffs (I counted once) and that alone is enough to destroy your skull completely. But other songs like "Primitive Future", "Inner Self"("Stronger than hate") and especially "Slaves of Pain" are also thrash classics -the pre-chorus break of Slaves of Pain is like none other.

In conclusion, absolutely essential. One of the ten best thrash albums of all time, hands down.

4.0 out of 5 stars A defining album in the history of Thrash Metal., 24 Feb 2006
By A. Hughes "huez2000" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Thrash metal was born in the early 80's and in my opinion had effectively died as a genre in metal by the mid to late 90's. Whilst some of the major bands in the genre continue to produce albums (Slayer are one act continuing to fly the flag with some level of credibility remaining) the music has become diluted with other influeces. But it is worth remembering the key acts and albums that shaped the music. And that is where Sepultura's Beneath the Remains belongs.

Thrash metal was defined by what were termed the 'big four' of Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer and rightly so. That is not to undermine other legendary bands of the time who were so influential (Testament,Exodus,Overkill, Suicidal Tendancies etc,)Beneath the Remains must be compared to classics such as Anthrax-Among the Living (87)Persistance of Time (90),Metallica-Master of Puppets (86) And Justice for All (88),Megadeth-Peace Sells but who's Buying (86)Rust in Peace (90)and Slayer-Reign in Blood (86) and Seasons in the Abyss (90).

Then in 1989 and 1990 two bands emerged which threatened to make the 'big four' into a big six! Those bands were Pantera and Sepultura. But in reality these two acts strenghtened the genre and added a new but still extemely heavy sound to the music whilst still encapsulating the riffing and rhytms of thrash. Pantera had a number of what could only be termed 'heavy rock' albums in the 80's (best avoided) but it was Cowboys from Hell (90) that established them as a new force in the music. Sepultura had also relesed some minor label albums in the ealy to mid 80's but it was Beneath the Remains (89) which confirmed their status in terms of classic thrash albums.

To the album? Well, it remains their fastest and heaviest work and is probably the closest thrash came to touching on the ferocity of its close cousin death metal. While it may not be their best album, Arise (91) and Chaos A.D. (93) are superior efforts, the musicianship and innovation that was shown in the songs thrust Sepultura into the mainstream of the metal scene. All in all, if you are a metal music fan and dont have this album, your collection is definitely not complete. A classic.
