5.0 out of 5 stars nobody sings dylan like baez (excepting dylan), 12 Nov 2000

I have been looking for this album for years. I have trawled record shops, I have worried friends. This version of sad eyed lady is worth killing for; is likely to produce the tears that dylan intended; should be a part of any serious collection. I defy ANYONE to emerge from these recordings unscathed. Absolutely bloody marvelous

5.0 out of 5 stars Joan Baez sings 16 Bob Dylan songs in a country way, 7 Oct 2003
By A Customer
"Any Day Now" is a 1968 collection of 16 Bob Dylan songs sung by Joan Baez, which is basically the best of both worlds: his songs, her voice. Baez was an early champion of Dylan's music and it is usually assumed that it was his influence that moved her from recording traditional folksongs to more contemporary, politically aware, protest songs. The best track on the album is probably "Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word." The musical style of the album is more country than folk, which explains in large part the selection of songs: "North Country Blues," "Drifter's Escape," and "Walkin' Down the Line." The country stylings are rather interesting and show Baez being rather experimental, albeit with songs with which she is intimately familiar even if they are not being culled from the first ranks of Dylan's music. Actually, the fact this is not Baez singing Dylan's hits is one of the things that makes it work. The albums title, of course, comes from a line in "I Shall Be Released." Whether you are a fan of Dylan's music or Baez's singing, this album should appeal to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars DYLAN A LA BAEZ, 28 Nov 2002
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
This is an album of superb Dylan interpretations and its enlightening to hear his songs from a female perspective. I heard some of Dylan's songs here first and only later experienced his own versions, for example I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine which is definitely very diffrent (and more beautiful to me) in Baez's version. Other great tracks include I Pity The Poor Immigrant (still as socially relevant as ever), Love Is Just A Four-Letter Word, the heart-breaking Walls Of Redwing (about inmates in a jail), One Too Many Mornings, Boots Of Spanish Leather and Restless Farewell. Everything about this album is just SO RIGHT: her phrasing, the choice of songs and her elegant delivery. This is THE classic folk album of the 1960s and also essential listening for Dylan fans. I love it.
