5.0 out of 5 stars the great lost group, 17 Nov 2000

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
That Quintessence vanished so completely off the face of the earth after being a staple on the alternative/hippy scene in the Uk in the 1970's is one of the mysteries of music. No one seems to revere their name, an even greater mystery. Yet at the time they were widely respected. Such is fame.

This band was brilliant because it played like a band, but you always had the sense that some in the group were simply out and out rockers, while others took religion and a spiritual way of life very seriously indeed. So there was a sort of creative tension that shows in the live tracks which survive. They played cathedrals, free festivals, you name it etc etc and featured a luminous mix of flute and very Dead-like guitar jams, all around a vocal mix of Vedanta, devotion, and Hindu iconography. It might sound daunting, but in fact their music has stood the test of time with flying colours.

Self in particular is a beautiful work, very spacey and devotional. Their music turned out to be an evolutionary cul-de-sac until kula shaker came along, and even there KS never had an iota of the gentleness of Quintessence.

Buy this album simply because it is the only one still available. Stick on the incesnse, assume a cross legged posture, and sing along...

3.0 out of 5 stars An unevened double hander, 31 Jan 2001
By A Customer
The existence of "Quintessence" escaped me for a while, until I read a back issue of Q magazine that cited them as a mix of George Harrison, Ravi Shankar and Kula Shaker. Listening to these albums and I partially agree. There is a real authenticity to the "Self" album - a strong blend of folk rock with an Eastern feel and I really liked the whole cosmic feel to it all, but the "Indweller" bit left me cold. It's a confusing mix of folk rock and Christianity with far too much flutey, pan-pipey things going on. I'm glad I've heard them and I'd recommend them to anyone, but this is an unevened double hander. Still, I wish more of their stuff was available, so if anyone from Island records is reading this ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Blissful and Divine, 7 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Having seen the group twice in the early seventies in Liverpool I bought 'In Blissful Company' then searched for the next 22years for the album that opened in the middle. Finally tracked a copy down 2 years ago. I bought this CD in Sheffield 4th Dec. Almost fell over when I found it at the back of all those Queen CD's. Imagine listening to Quintessence without all the pops and scratches of vinyl. A wonderful double helping of nostalgia. There has been nothing comparable since. PLEASE put the other albums on CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quintessence not so cosmic in their later years
I saw Quintessence a dozen times in the late 60s and early 70s but by the time that self and indweller were released they had lost their way a little. Read more
