This second disc of Grainger's orchestral works starts with Youthful Suite, the arrangements he made late in life of some of his earliest pieces. Grainger was proud of the fact that, even in juvenilia superficially like much salon music, he had stretched the vocabulary of music--some of these pieces from the late 1890s anticipate, rather than echo, Debussy; the "Norse Dirge" is particularly powerful--Grainger at his most lyrically gloomy. Much of the rest of the disc is taken up with the re-orchestrations of favourite miniatures which Grainger made for Stokowski in 1949--Stokowski cut them about, so that these are premiere recordings of Grainger's last thoughts on such favourites as Handel in the Strand, given some wonderfully blaring brass, and Early One Morning with an evocative euphonium solo. The complicated performance history of Grainger's bouncily percussive ballet The Warriors means that this is also a premiere recording of what Grainger intended, though without the 16 extra pianos he seems to have authorised for a 1929 performance. Hickox's dedication to this splendidly loopy, inventive music is undoubted--he and the BBC Philharmonic also give it charm and polish. --Roz Kaveney
