Poul Ruders has built a sizeable reputation for his imaginative and colourful orchestral music. The First Symphony made a real impact at the 1989 London Proms, and its easy to hear why. A journey from elation to desolation, this is music in a constant state of change--volatile but never aimless. Ruders frequently unleashes the orchestra to visceral effect, yet elsewhere shows real finesse: the second movement is little more than the haunting interplay of two chords. The fill-ups are well chosen and aptly, though never naively illustrative: Tundra is stark and frozen; Thus Saw St John brooding and ominous; Gong a powerhouse of energy close to boiling point. Segerstam produces powerful performances that don't undersell the physical impact of this music. Enjoy, and then investigate further: perhaps the complete "Solar Trilogy" (Gong is the first part), from which Zenith is Ruders's most ethereal work, or the Second Symphony (on the Da Capo label)--less OTT but recognisably the intense sound world of Poul Ruders. --Richard Whitehouse
