Having enjoyed Gliere's 2nd and 3rd symphonies, I hesitated before acquiring the 1st symphony as British critics have always been rather dismissive of it. I can't understand why. It's true the folk melody which opens the symphony is rather trite (so in my opinion is the one that opens the Rach 3 piano concerto) but before long Gliere develops it with tremendous bravura in a way that'll leave you breathless with excitement. Flambouyant orchestration, memorable tunes and even a touch of Russian soulfulness make for a highly enjoyable listening experience and this Chandos version is superbly played and recorded. But see if you can track down the early 1950s recording of the elderly Gliere conducting his own work - the recording is surprisingly good for its age and the performance is electrifying.
The selection from Gliere's ballet the Red Poppy is also most enjoyable but in my opinion the whole ballet is worth listening to, so if you're tempted then take a look at the Naxos recording which I've also reviewed.
