I had a fondness for Haitink's recording of the Sixth, but this is altogether more stimulating and wilder in the fast movements. Shostakovich is more his own person here with the SNO; you sense he is being reconfigured as a modernist Mahler by the Concertgebouw in what is a smooth and sonically spectacular Decca disc. Chandos though provide an almost panoramic and airy acoustic with a more upfront and less homogeneous orchestral sound and this is one in an entirely excellent series of symphonies recorded for the company by Jarvi in the 1980s. The First Symphony is also given an intense and weighty rendition that defeats my previous comparison, Ormandy (Sony), in every way except smoothness. A motoring analogy might be this all terrain vehicle as opposed to smoother but safer rides in a luxury sports car. Shostakovich must be taken closer to the wilderness.
