5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful 'English Symphonies' from one of England's finest composers, 15 Aug 2007
The genre of English classicism is one which recieves little attention. Most of the 18th century English music heard is in the baroque style, and therefore it is most interesting to hear an English classical symphonic style, by a master of the late baroque. There is indeed some baroque influence in these symphonies, but the classical style, probably influenced by J.C. Bach (who was in London at the time), is the most evident. This is what makes them unique - they make use of the best aspects of the baroque and classical styles. There is also wholesome Englishness evident throughout. I particularly like the first movement of symphony no. 1. In these works, Arne clearly demonstrates that he is a versatile composer, who does not cling on to the baroque style when he clearly wishes to incorporate the features of the new style. When Arne started composing he was a contemporary of Handel and J.S. Bach, and by the time these symphonies were published in 1767 he was a contemporary of Mozart and J.C. Bach - he had adapted accordingly. Again, it is a shame that these works are not so well-known -they are some of greatest works by one of England's greatest composers. Arne should really be recognised for more than 'Rule Britannia', which is rarely performed in the original version by Arne, anyway. This is recommended to all lovers of 18th-century classical music. And if you enjoyed this, I highly recommend Wesley's symphonies, another English composer writing in a definite classical style. All further proof that England is most certainly not 'Das Land ohne Musik'.
