Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee were all very well as an acoustic folk blues duo, but lets face it, they hated each other's guts and sometimes their playing got a little formulaic.Brownie followed the Carolina school of playing which is quite lovely, and it contrasted with Sonny's raspier approach to both vocals and harmonica. You always got that feeling though that Sonny was holding back. Well this album is where they threw the gates open and let the Mississippi monster inside him out for a canter. The sound is plain nasty, and I mean that in a good way. If you like what the North Mississipi Allstars are up to these days then you will love this record. Sonny's vocals are harsher and more satisfying than you will hear on his hundreds of other recordings. His harpin gets lowdown and lonesome too. Up against this is some really sleazy slithery delta guitar from Johny Winter. Altogether a real eyeopener for fans of Sonny's work. And if you don't know anything about him, this is a good place to start. Nasty blues, not widdly diddly blues rock boy waistcoat wearin nonsense. Whatya doing sitting their gawping. Get your card out...
