Product Description
Description
This lavish set (a 30-song CD accompanied by a 48-page bookand all enclosed in a slipcase) was among Frank Zappa's final projects before his death in late '93. It was assembled from over thirty years of recordings. The earliest are from '59--one is of The Blackouts in which Zappa was the drummer, while the other features Don Van Vliet as vocalist with the Zappa brothers (Frank on Bobby) on guitars. There's a '61 recording of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" (which made its official recorded debut seven years later on The Mothers Of Invention's WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY), audio verite snippets, and film soundtrack music Zappa scored and recorded in '63. There are also solo pieces scored for synthesizers and original versions of pieces recorded by his '70s and '80s bands. From doo-wop to Edgar Varese, this is as closeto autobiographical as any one Zappa album can be--and smartly edited and sequenced to boot!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE FRANK ZAPPA MEMORIAL BARBECUE, 21 Jan 2003
This album will probably only be of interest to hardcore Zappaphiles, but if you happen to be one, it certainly delivers the goods. It's a largely chronological compilation of outtakes and curios from the 1950's, 60's & 70's and is rapidly becoming one of my favourite Zappa artefacts. Several conspicuous appearances by Captain Beefheart are an added bonus.

As you might expect it's an eclectic selection, which includes previously unreleased material (such as "Lil' Clanton shuffle" from the HOT RATS sessions), great alternate takes of well-known tracks (eg a sublime version of "Sharleena"), some typically off-the-wall soundbites (the "booger" stories are great!) and a few genuinely silly moments (like "Lost in a whirlpool", featuring comedy falsetto vocals from a teenage Don Van Vliet and lyrics which make rather too literal comparisons between being dumped by your girlfriend and getting flushed down the toilet)....

Frank seems to have compiled it as a personal nostalgia trip and the extensive sleevenotes, brimming with background information, make it almost autobiographical. No Zappa collection can be complete without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost classics in need of your discovery, 6 Jan 2002
The Lost Episodes brings back to life some 30 recordings from Mr Zappa's basement. A brilliant compilation of out-takes including some bizarre , but very funny poetry from the master of the absurd Captain Beefheart. Some songs are reworkings of already released material, but are well worth hearing to see just how Zappa's compositions can be played in a variety of styles. Some of the best tracks included are: 'Run Home Slow Theme', 'Sharlena', 'The Grand Wazoo' and the amazing 'Alley Cat' which features members of The Magic Band. A must for any fan of the late-genius or indeed the amazing Captain Beefheart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this Mystery Disc Phase Two ?, 18 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Really really great, a packed collage of tunes prior to Zappa's MOI years, slightly spoilt by track 29 but the best ever version of "Sharleena" makes up for that.

Great little booklet, too.
