Product Description
Description
Two more hours of assorted live performances from Frank Zappa's vast archives. The intent here was again to show off the skills of his '70s and '80s ensembles (one cut of the Mothers in '69 appears on each of the discs) and the songs are for the most part drawn from then-current releases. A few older numbers ("My guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama" and "Willie the Pimp") are given a spin, and show themselves worthy of the trip. A nice surprise comes in the form of "Love Of My Life" (from RUBEN & THE JETS) played at a New York City club in 1980 (the city where large chunks of the early Mothers of Invention's repertoire came into its own). As with the othertitles in this series, they're sequenced with a keen sense of making a worthy listening experience and not just documenting the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure brilliance, whatever your Zappa tastes., 3 Aug 2001

(REAL NAME)
This CD of live FZ/Mothers material is Zappa at his unpredictable, unconventional best. This two CD set contains mainly music from what many people consider his best ensembles in the late 70s/early 80s. It includes classic Zappa numbers such as 'My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama' and the original version of 'The Torture Never Stops' featuring Cpt. Beefheart's wailing vocals and harmonica. For those who consider Zappa's live material to be superior to his studio recordings, this CD is a godsend with superb live versions of 'Stevie's Spanking' featuring a young Steve Vai's majestic guitar work and 'Outside Now', a guitar-orientated version of the song from 'Joe's Garage'. Zappa's policy of recording ALL his live performances means that this album is the BEST that the Mothers ever produced and many 'mid-tour' tracks are much faster than their original CD versions. The high-light of this CD for me is the epic 'Evil Prince', a supremely inventive parody of a broadway musical with (of course) an amazing guitar solo by Zappa himself. From jazz to blues to rock to downright hilarious nonsense, this CD is a uncategorizable must-have.
