Product Description
Description
Among Zappa's grittier works, ZOOT ALLURES is a strong piece of mid-'70s work that focuses more on the interaction of Zappa and a small group that includes Terry Bozzio, Ruth Underwood and Roy Estrada, temporarily abandoning the jazzy, large-scale efforts of previous albums like ONE SIZE FITS ALL. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but all the disparate ingredientsfor a satisfying whole. There are simple, catchy rock tuneslike "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station", "Ms. Pinky", a synth-led ode to a sexual toy, and "Disco Boy", which foreshadowed Zappa's hit "Dancing Fool". The lovely instrumental "Black Napkins" is among the prettiest compositions in Zappa's canon, highlighting his guitar work in an uncharacteristically restrained mode. The arguable centrepiece of the album is the epic-length "The Torture Never Stops". Sung by Zappa in his deepest, dirtiest, most ominous voice, the song recountsthe tale of an evil monarch who does unspeakable things in the depths of his castle. Full of Zappa's bluesy guitar interjections, its one of the most deliciously unsavoury things FZ ever committed to tape.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is amazing!, 30 Jun 2000

Patrick O'Hearn and Eddie Jobson are both on the cover but neither play on the album. Notice Terry Bozzio's "ANGELS" t-shirt. This is one of the best Zappa albums out, especially Wind Up Working In A Gas Station & The Torture Never Stops.

4.0 out of 5 stars The sick product of a warped mind... thank goodness!, 20 Nov 2002

From the moral warnings against dozing through school of “Wind up working...” to the anti-macho satire of “Disco Boy” by way of the Gothic sexual shenanigans of “The torture...”, this is typical Zappa territory: wicked, cynical, moralising, literate black comedy lyrics sung (and in the case of “torture”, growled malevolently) over snidely subversive parodies of rock, pop, jazz and any other musical style the late, great Frank could think of.

If you can’t believe all of American culture is as bland and safe as Hollywood would have us believe, listen to this. It’s wicked stuff of the nastiest sort. Refreshing as an alsatian’s fart after a day in a candy-floss factory.

3.0 out of 5 stars Zappa a little boring on his own, 23 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Zappa did a lot himself on this album. Except playing guitar and doing the lead vocals he also played bass and keyboards. It's basically FZ and drummer Terry Bozzio playing songs that in most cases aren't fabulous compositions. That makes it a little boring. The opening track Wind Up Working In A Gas Station is among the best though, but compare it to the live version on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore which really cooks!
