Product Description

CD Description

A fine alternative to Rhino's compilation of the same name,British label Ace's THE VERY BEST OF JACKIE WILSON is true to its title, from the swinging, post-doo wop exuberance of 1957's "Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want to Meet)"to the orchestrated deep soul of 1971's "Love is Funny ThatWay". All of Wilson's best-known cuts are here, including the string-sweetened ballad "Night", the driving, dance floorsummons "Baby Workout", and Wilson's excellent 1967 versionof Gary Jackson's "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher".
Here too, of course, is Wilson's signature song "Lonely Teardrops", an impassioned, yearning slice of pop perfection (ironically, Wilson suffered a heart attack while performing the song on Dick Clark's Oldies show in 1975). Wilson's particular skill was blending an R&B edge with pop accessibility, and his supple, soaring tenor was well suited to ballads, mid-tempo shuffles, and sweaty, high-octane rave-upsalike. At 24 tracks, Ace's compilation gives fine samples of each, and differs from the Rhino set only in its inclusionof more cuts from Wilson's later career. It makes a convincing case for Wilson as one of the most dynamic, talented, and memorable performers of the era.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable - one of the all time greats., 8 Feb 2002
An intense and smooth performer onstage (see the old clips of his performance on Ed Sulivan) Jackie Wilson has been and still is inspirational to many performers (Micheal Jackson owes him much.)

The vocals and musical arrangements are rich and oh so easy to listen to, hence this CD gets regular playing on my system.

'Higher and higher'? An all time dance classic, it's been a hit many times and will continue to move backsides out of chairs and onto the floor for ever. The looping baseline that kicks in to start the record off and continues throughout it's 3 minutes is unsurpassed in it's ability to move feet and bodies to it's rhythm.

Everyone who loves contempory music, what ever genre, should have a copy of Jackie Wilson's Greatest Hits in their collection.

Cliff

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best R+B singers of his generation, 20 Jan 2005

(#1 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Jackie Wilson, whose style of music was at the R+B end of the rock'n'roll spectrum, had a long string of hits in America during the fifties and sixties but it was only in the eighties that he made any real impact in Britain (a few years after he died) following the use of one of his songs in a TV commercial.
UK fans will recognize Reet petite (a number one UK hit) and two other major UK hits, I get the sweetest feeling and Your love has lifted me higher and higher (a song that has been covered by many other singers including Dolly Parton and Rita Coolidge). All these songs had been huge American hits for Jackie in the fifties and sixties.

Among Jackie's other American hits, this collection includes Lonely teardrops, That's why I love you so, Night, To be loved, I'll be satisfied, Whispers getting louder and A woman a lover a friend.

It is amazing that Jackie made little impact in the UK during his lifetime but, helped by the Commodores' tribute song (Nightshift) and some TV commercials, he has gained a measure of posthumous recognition.

This collection provides an excellent introduction to Jackie's music including all the tracks that really matter.

Its wrong to say Wilson had no U K hits till the 80s as Reet Petite was a Top 3 hit in 1957 with 3 other Top 40 ones up to 1960. Read more
