Andrew Manze's beguiling new Geminani release has sent me back to one of his earlier recordings, a performance of Biber's splendid 1681 collection. The playing is - as expected from Romanesca - first class. Manze's contribution is imaginative enough to enable the listener to appreciate how Biber was the most lauded violinist of his day in both technique and flair without going to the interpretative extremes one can find in his recent Bach sonata collection. It is worth getting the double set in preference to the single version, though both feature the splendid Pascaglia and the characteristically wacky sonata representiva, in which can be heard a variety of domestic beasts including a silly chicken and a wily cat. These pieces serve as a fine introduction to the unique world of Biber. The sound is up to the higest HM standards
