Product Description

CD Description

The first incarnation of Love collapsed at the completion of FOREVER CHANGES. Arthur Lee assembled a new line-up, whichbrought forth first FOUR SAIL. Departing from Elektra, the label with which they'd started, Love released the two-record set, OUT HERE. Now retitled OUT THERE, it includes all of its original tracks, along with three additional numbers pulled from the band's final release, FALSE START.
Love's fifth album in only three years was misunderstood when it appeared in 1969, and can now be heard on its own, without the expectations that had been set up by the band's prior work. "I'll Pray For You" has a sassy rock & roll exuberance that harks back to their debut, while the melodicism of "Listen ToMy Song" sounds like FOREVER CHANGES sans orchestration. Among the additional tracks is the exciting Jimi Hendrix collaboration, "The Everlasting First", which was the clear high point of the album from which it was culled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arthur Lee - Genius Confirmed, 27 Jul 2004
By P. Egerton "pierre1401" (Cheshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Love's albums post Forever Changes, seem to be overlooked even by fans of the band. And critics would have you believe that nothing of note was recorded by Arthur Lee & Love after 1968. But this C.D. contains some of the best songs Arthur Lee ever wrote.

This album is a collection of songs taken from two albums that were released after 1969's Four Sail (also underrated). 1969's Out Here, and 1970's False Start.

I'll Pray For You and Love Is Coming, are positive, upbeat songs with a gospel like vibe to them. While, I Still Wonder and Stand Out are Jimi Hendrix influenced masterpieces. In fact Jimi Hendrix appears on the album, playing on a song which he also co-wrote with Arthur Lee, called The Everlasting First. Listen To My Song is sang and played brilliently, and harks back to the acoustic theme of Forever Changes.

Overall, I find it hard to believe that this album isn't regarded in the same way the earlier ones are. I repeat that some of their best songs are here, and it is an essential purchase for all Love fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Stone Groove, but beware of the leprauchauns!, 1 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Worth it for the chilling "slow-grind" version of "Signed D.C." alone. They sound more like "Free" than "Love".

There's a broad range of styles covered here - and look out for the guest appearance of
*** JIMI HENDRIX ***
on "The Everlasting First" - instantly recognisable!

"I Still Wonder" and "Stand Out" sound Hendrix-inspired - acid rock!

"Gather Round" is great - bitter, cynical Arthur Lee with an almost Gospel backing.

The only irritant, for me, is the speeded-up guitar playing on "You Are Something" - like Pinky and Perky in a folk jam with some leprauchauns!

3.0 out of 5 stars Pffft!! A Shallow Echo of the Glory Days!, 24 Jul 2008
By Roger from Wrexham (Wrexham UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Out Here (Audio CD)
There were times when folk salivated at the thought of a double album's worth of Love. Sadly these were not those times. Firstly the old band was long gone and it shows, there is no flair, no belief, just another gathering of mid-60s' veterans doing their wayward indulgent stuff (Who the heck let the drummer `kerdoink' to excess on the only promising track `Doggone'? The song sounds infinitely better in the excerpt of the live version on `Love Story DVD'!)
Secondly we now have on the credits one Mr Arthuly, and he is not Mr Arthur Lee by any stretch of generosity. The songs in general sound as if they are all the first drafts of much potentially better efforts; `Car Lights on in the Daytime Blues' is a prime example of a throwaway, like something put together quickly to fulfil contractual obligations. A Lesser version of `Signed DC' does not help and the rest just make you want to reach for the first three Love albums and blot this out.
As a devoted fan of Love at their best I was very distraught when I purchased this in 1970, three plays to see if I'd missed something and thence consigned to the dusty part of my collection. Heck I felt betrayed!
1 * for the first part of `Doggone'; 1* for the flashes of five or six seconds worth of gold bits in the other songs and 1* because it still stands a measure above a lot of the dross that was coming out in the early 70s (and that folks is faint praise indeed)- not one I'd recommend unless you are itching to have a complete collection of Love & Arthur Lee's works.
