Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Troubadour, fire-eater, busker, tap dancer--Rory McLeod has, it can safely be said, seen life. For much of the 1990s he travelled the world armed with nothing more than a guitar, harmonica and a pair of spoons, occasionally dropping into studios to record an impressive body of work. His fifth album confirms his status as one of our great-unsung musical heroes. Accepted song structure is ignored--McLeod says what he has to say whether it takes 48 seconds or over ten minutes. Lyrically he can move from a simple tribute to his grandmother to the joys of booze ("my friends say without olives in my drink I'd starve to death"), all delivered with charm and panache and a slight, but forgivable, tendency to meander. Despite supplementing his own vocals, guitar, foot percussion, spoons, trombone and frankly incredible harmonica work with a range of guest players--all of whom add neat touches--it is Rory who dominates throughout, the sheer force of his personality shining though every moment. --Phil Udell

5.0 out of 5 stars Rory at his best!!, 4 Jul 2003
I first heard Rory Mcleod years ago in a tiny pub at the wrong end of Brighton and this guy should be FAMOUS!!! He arrived carrying a small music shop of instruments - and if he needs drums, he tap-dances.
On this album, the bluesy Tea Martoonies is one of my favourite songs ever - a frighteningly accurate 'been there, done that' of drinking. Rambling Woman is great folk, Foreigner Forever has a Caribbean feel, Spitalfields Market is Cockney Country, and Punchinello's Confession has the best lyrics with a beautifully mournful East European melody.
If you haven't heard Rory before, take a chance on this album - the melodies don't go where everyone else does and if the lyrics don't catch you, then you're already dead :-))

Absolutely fantastic album that takes you through all kinds of emotions. The hard work of the spital field marketeers to the loss of his grandma it is truly a fine piece of life. Truly one of my all time favorite albums.
