1.0 out of 5 stars Making Friends..... or what?, 26 Jan 2005
By A Customer
The problem with this book is actually visible on the front cover. The main title is "Making Friends" but that is followed by a subtitle "A Guide to Getting Along with People". These two issues may be related, but they are distinctly different objectives. In fact this book is almost entirely about "Getting Along with People". In terms of making new friends, it says almost nothing. Good evidence for this is given on page 10, where it offers a suggestion on how you can improve your self-image. The advice is that you ask a trusted FRIEND 'how do I come across?' If you already have friends like that, you don't need this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for me, 8 May 2001
By A Customer
I have Andrew Matthews' other two books - Being Happy and Follow your Heart, I would recommend them to anybody. This one didn't work for me. The content is fine but I just think that if you are having problems dealing with people you should work on your own 'challenges', (which is dealt with in the 'Being Happy' edition) - making friends will just follow, so no need for this one !

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful stuff, 17 Jun 2009

I have to give a counter balance to the other reviews. Making Friends is indeed not about how to meet new people. It is about interacting with people in a way that is pleasant and effective, for you and often for the people involved. Like the other books of Matthews I have (Being Happy and Follow your Heart) it tackles a specific area of personal development leading towards more happiness and peace of mind. While re-reading the various books over the last 8 years, I have found that sometimes one gives more benefit than another, depending on personal circumstances in my life at the time. However, each time at least one of the books will hit the spot and effectively help me lighten up or progress to where I want to be. I have found the same with a large number of people I've given the books to: they tend to prefer different ones for no clear (to me at least) reason, but generally at least one has impact at any time. My advice: buy all 3 and read them all. Each time you re-read you will find some more appealing than others, and you will find your favourite one will change as you do. They are probably the best written, most easy to read, and most relevant books around. They work fantastically if you let them.
