Poland's long history has produced a notable cultural heritage that is not yet fully recognized outside the borders of that country. Polish visual artists have, especially since the mid-19th century, developed a style which reflects a strong identification with developments elsewhere in Europe while still maintaining a distinctive identity - recognizable "Polishness". This study of the painting scene in Poland comes at a time when the country is emerging from the rigours of its post-totalitarian past to rejoin the cultural and political mainstream of Europe. The introductory essay traces the historical background and artistic developments of a country passing through the traumas of the 20th century while the profiles of 48 notable artists of all generations create a perspective of the major trends of the past two decades and point to potential future developments.
