Synopsis
Anneke Silver's paintings reflect her long-standing interest in the relationship between spirituality and the Australian landscape. Although much of the earlier painting was abstract and gestural, in the more recent work she has sought to explore the sign systems of early European cultures with particular reference to fertility and goddess figures. Silver's "bush icons" affirm the sacred quality of the land: she is profoundly interested in the Great Mother as an embodiment of the primal energies of Nature and sees her art as a spiritual celebration "in which both the roots of European and Aboriginal culture dance to a new rhythm surrounded by the Australian landscape".
