Synopsis
This is an exploration of images of Australian suburbia, from the turn-of-the-century works of Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin, through the modernist suburban reveries of Clarice Beckett in the 1930s and the surreal War-time streetscapes of Albert Tucker, to the artists of today. Artists' images are juxtaposed with visual material documenting the growth of suburbia and the marketing of its central icon, the Dream Home. Images from over 30 Australian artists are reproduced, many of them in colour. As contemporary artists look increasingly into their own backyards, they are producing work of lively engagement and subtle critique. This work provides a detailed look at these diverse responses, concentrating on the art of the past three decades. Works discussed range from the deceptively banal documentations of Dale Hickey and Jenny Watson, to the pop sensibilities of Jon Campbell and Howard Arkely, and the mordant suburban vignettes of Carrol Jerrums, Jon Cattapan, and Tracey Moffat.
