5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect pictoral intro to all the countries of the Mekong, 20 Mar 2002
By A Customer
If you're a traveler interested in Southeast Asia, in particular the 6 countries that the Mekong river flows through then this coffee table sized book is essential viewing and reading!
It seems that the author, a middle aged housewife, went to extraordinary lengths to take some really fantastic pictures of life alongside the Mekong, the people, their culture and traditions.
Full of brilliant full pages photos, the book serves not only as a template for travel into the region: China, Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam; but should also be proof that travel through this, one of Asia's final frontiers is a very rewarding and eye-opening experience.
These days it is really easy to travel through Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. but with this book you can get a sense of what all these countries have to offer away from the tourist traps, malls, markets and discos. The marvellous pictures make you want to go out there and explore, not just the scenery but also meet the people and experience their way of life.
Buy the book and you won't be disappointed by the excellent pictures and the quite insightful and amusing text which recounts the local history, gives some pretty useful travelers tips and details some the author's trials and tribulations as she travelled almost singlehandedly back-packer style through some pretty rough territory.
Inspirational and beautiful, if you ever needed a reason to get up and go, then this book should give it to you.
The Mekong River does indeed look very magical.
