If interested by 900 years of Cambodian History, a must read, 22 April 2001
As one of the World's leading experts on Cambodia, David Chandler gives an invaluable insight in Cambodian History.Starting with the fascinating mystery surrounding the Leper King, Chandler uses a mirriade of sources and references. The reader can only but by amased at the mastery of the author. In fact, reading Chandler's work enables one to discover other scholars, recent and older. The final essay, "The Tragedy of Cambodian History Revisited", although a bit old (1994), is a stunning insight in this South-Eastern nation's life. I was fascinated from the first line, to the last one. The only flip side might be the lay-out of the work, in which some pages are more than half filled by foot-notes. It is clearly an collection of academic essays. Overall, if one is looking for a brief, yet detailled, overview of 900 or so years of Cambodian History, this is the perfect work.
