5.0 out of 5 stars An enchanting guide to the galapagos, 6 Jun 2001
By A Customer
The Galapagos Islands, by Pierre Constant is truly a rare book. One which not only serves as a guide book, informing and advising but also as a 'help' book - explaining and describing. It engulfs everything, from the history of the islands to a detailed chapter on each animal species found on the islands. Each island also has its own chapter (aswell as an extremely good map), not only dedicated to the history of the islands but also to day to day life on them. It offers excellent travel advice, from accomodation to eating out and from longer boat trips to shorter day time activities. I found the book's index very user friendly, laid out so that anything you might want to look up could be found easily, without having to endlessly flick through hundreds of pages. Each individual page was clearly set out, in relatively large script and the maps were accurately drawn, yet did not look too cramped on the page. There are also many colour photographs, which give you a really good idea of what you should expect. With even more maps and photographs than the third edition, Pierre Constants fourth edition of The Galapagos Islands is a fascinating book, without which i would not have survived on the islands. Not only is it a guide to flick through for reference but also an interesting read from cover to cover.
