This publication details proceedings and provides a report of the 12th meeting on health and agriculture, conducted at ministerial level, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, May 2001. The meeting itself focused discussion on the role of community participation in developing healthy markets and food safety, as well as that on zoonoses that affect the economy and public health, such as brucellosis, bovine tuberculosis, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, foot-and-mouth disease and other emerging zoonoses. It also offered an overview of the progress made by countries in veterinary public health and animal health through their co-operation with the Pan American Health Organization, as well as promoting the regional consolidation of intersectoral action between the health and agricultural sectors.
