Product Description

Book Description

In the 1970s, Benny Anderson reached worldwide fame as the songwriter and keyboard player in ABBA, one of the all-time classic pop acts. However, his first taste of stardom came a decade earlier, when he was a member of the Hep Stars, Sweden's biggest pop band of the 1960s. In a marked contrast to ABBA's studio-based career, The Hep Stars swept through the country like a tidal wave, scoring hit after hit and playing hundreds of gigs each year in front of hordes of screaming teens. Benny's Road to ABBA tells the amazing story of Benny's life and career in Swede-pop.

5.0 out of 5 stars A colourfull and eventfull start to a music career, 3 May 2006
Benny's Road to Abba is another highly readable, entertaining and informative book from music guru Carl Magnus Palm.

Like his previous books it is written in an emphatic and sensitive style without any of the tabloid, muck raking sensationalism favoured by lessor music biographers. It charts Benny's life from accordian and piano playing youngster through to the first recordings made by the Abba quartet prior to Waterloo.

Benny had experienced by his late twenties what most of us don't experience in a life time. A member of Swedens number one band of the sixties, The Hep stars, making a movie, touring in a camper band from gig to gig, living the high life that success brought, adored by countless female fans and receiving marriage proposals from middle aged women. And that's besides having a wife and children whilst still a teenager and a run in with the Swedish taxman!

In these days of pop star overnight fame through television contests, it is refreshing to read of how pop "apprenticeships" used to happen. the struggle for work, a chance to perform and the enthusiasm that drove them on despite the set backs. Above all Palm conveys the sense of fun that was Bennys early life.

The book is a must for any music fan who enjoys a biography written in a straight forward matter of fact let-the-facts-speak-for-themselves style which is Palms strength as a biographer. Benny had an exciting, colourful and dramatic start to his music career and Palm captures it all perfectly.

An entertaining read, even if you are not a fan of Benny's music.
