Product Description

Synopsis
MultipleCity 2003 was a project that gathered artists of various countries and had them react to Panama city. Every artist was invited to create an individual piece in the streets and with the streets. The key issue was that the artworks had to respond to physical, social, and cultural aspects of the city. At the same time, the artists had to actively relate to the city, and struggle with its myriad seductions and pressing problems. It was intended that the processes and final works (without necessarily being interactive) involved the various urban communities, and had some sort of impact upon them. This catalogue, published almost a year after the event, portrays much more than the event itself. To enhance its outreach - in addition to the text written by the curators and the sections dedicated to each participating artist-the catalogue includes essays by specialists who expose and examine the complex dynamics of Panama City. These analyses also touch upon the pressing urban problems of the contemporary metropolis, a subject of particular urgency for poor countries, where accelerated urbanization will undoubtedly transform the anthropological condition of the planet. Kaleidoscopes of pictures, phrases, figures, commentaries, songs, annotations and other essential elements to help interpret the city, are interspersed with the various essays. Text in English and Spanish.
