A most inspiring read., 11 Mar 2006
I read this book as a young designer looking for a little inspiration and I have come away with a lot more than that!!The opening sentence proclaims that "The profession of a designer is a turbulant one." The authors understanding of the subject matter is second to none and is shown from the offset and throughout the rest of the book. Their description of the designer is precise, and the book follows with a look at each of the four designers. Bruno Munari, Charles and Ray Eames, Marti Guixe and Jurgen Bey. The book is well separated into four main sections, based around the afore mentioned designers. Each section covers the designer and their work. Between the first two sections and the last two sections of the book are timelines depicting key events in history whilst the designers were alive (or still alive). Whilst reading the book you can't help to get yourself wrapped up into the mindset of the various designers, and this is a great chance to learn about how they have been influenced and in turn how they have influenced the modern world. Whilst each designer is very different the book tends to draw relavent links between the designers operating in different places and in different times. The book also lends you the capacity to read through the book and make connections between the designers on your own. The array of work displayed for each designer is abundant and of good quality with clear images and short descriptions (usually by the designer themselves). The content is an excellent start for further reading on either designer featured in the book. I can completely reccomend this book if you would like to gain understanding surrounding a selection of designers, each who is individual and each who operates or operated at the forefront of their profession. This book is loaded with inspiration for those young designers out there and is a superb motivation tool.
