4.0 out of 5 stars First and highly interesting anthology of Belgian cinema, 5 Jan 2000
Many foreigners may have heard of a Belgian movie for the first time this year thanks to the winning of the Palme D'or in cannes with Rosetta. But, big surprise, cinema exists as long in Belgium as anywhere else. What filmmakers have done the last hundred years in this small country, you'll be able to find out in this large book. There's a review of every movie ever made in Belgium. Although I regret that there are no essays at all included, it has become a wonderful and at times surprising piece of work. You will find low budget pornographic movies next to literary adaptations. The book does no effort to restore the reputation of a quasi unknown cinema-tradition ( Belgians have never been great chauvininsts), but by reading through the 1000 pages, the objective approach falls together into a highly personal history. You'll meet a weirder history of a country than you might have learned at school, but it's all the more compelling.
