I ordered this book (and part 2 as well) because I had been doing family research and had discovered that my great grandfather had moved from Germany to South Shields. It was fascinating to get an idea of what his life would have been like. There were several pictures of the street where he had his butcher's shop and also lived. There is information in the book about what life was like and about how or why some of the photos would have been taken. I must admit that I have always found this type of book interesting and am starting to get quite a collection of them. Of course the photos mean more to the reader if the subject of the pictures is known. I had to refer to my present day and old maps of South Shields, but this did not really detract from my enjoyment. My father has also enjoyed the book because he had been to South Shields as a teenager, so he could remember something of what it was like. I am sure I will be dipping into this book regularly as my research progresses. And, I have today ordered another copy for my father!
