5.0 out of 5 stars Not about image manipulation, about taking photos!, 30 Mar 2004
For all of the digital photography books out there which cheat you with a good third of the content about choosing a camera (you probably already have one, which is WHY you bought the book anyway), how to connect it to a computer etc etc, this one gets straight to business.

Good, solid, well-laid out, inspirational advice on using your camera to take good pictures, NOT manipulate them afterwards with software, which you need a different book about - and too right too! If you've got a new camera and want to know what all those exciting options and choices you can use when you get clicking, get this book. It will give you real power, through the knowledge of what your camera can and can't do for you, and open up your creativity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 30 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Amongst a plethora of titles claiming to explain the principles of picture-taking this one delivers. Offering sound practical advice of how to plan and finally execute that elusive image in an easy to understand manner. It does not, it has to be said, offer any advice on image editing or manipulation with programs such as Photoshop, which was nice!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners..., 25 Jun 2004
The books starts with a couple of pages explaining the difference between film and digital and also considers the pros and cons of each - a bit late if you have already bought your digicam! A little of this book does concern what camera to buy and which accessories you might need, also it devotes a few pages to what to do with your digital images after you have shot them.

I would suggest that if your digicam is a simple point and shoot which offers little or no control over settings such as shutter speed, aperture, white balance, etc. then much of the book will be wasted. Most digicams do offer a lot of creative control these days and if you are new to photography then you will find this book invaluable as a great starting place.

Also consider "40 Digital Photo Retouching Techniques" which I also bought and was equally pleased with.
