Synopsis
During the last four years of his life, Henri Matisse devoted himself entirely to the creation of the chapel at Vence, a small religious monument built a few hundred metres from his home: the "masterpiece of my entire life work", as he stated on several occasions. Between December 1947 and June 1951, the years of gestation, then of building, and at last the consecration of the Vence Dominicans' Chapelle Notre-Dame du Rosaire (Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary), Brother Rayssiguier notes from day to day the conversations he has with Matisse on every subject: modifications to the plans, iconography, decorative elements, materials, including liturgical issues. This document offers an entirely unfamiliar portrayal of the painter and his way of life at that time. This diary into the heart of creation is illustrated with drawings and documents enabling the reader to grasp all stages of the work.
