5.0 out of 5 stars cheap. useful., 3 Mar 2004

i can't think of any book that explains more about the cars. no book on F1 is ever THE latest and many general books explain the principles but not the details, which is what most students will be working on if they choose F1 as a career. the book is not overly long since it concentrates on detail drawings. if you are extremely picky, you'll find that there is no explanation of what each design does to the performance but we are talking about 20 variations of the same component for example when each team has different details in their aero package. so unless you posess a CFD model of the car, evaluation of each design is impossible. you can however see the evolution of the cars and that's why I will buy the previous books so that i can make comparisons with the cars from as early as 96 (Piola's book was then smaller and may not be on sale new...).

4.0 out of 5 stars A technical insight into Formula 1, 3 Feb 2004
This book is a veritable gold mine of drawings for the technically minded Formula 1 fan, covering the whole of the 2002 season and the start of the 2003 season.

The drawings are all excellent, with numerous pictures on each page showing each team's take on the various rules/allowances. For the main part the analysis is focused on the external body form of the cars -since the authors had little or no input from the teams themselves, thus restricting them to only those features which can be seen from the trackside/pitlane, but this area is very highly documented for each car. However, this does mean that the sections on engines/powertrain must be taken with a pinch of salt as much has been estimated, or scaled from photographs.

I would not recommend this title to the casual formula 1 fan, -it contains no photographs, and very little of what actually happened in the championship itself, but to those wishing to have a very high degree of technical insight into the pinnacle of motor racing, with at least some prior knowledge of the subject, this must be one of the best books on the market, and to these people it would come very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like they've said: cheap and useful, 5 Nov 2004

Like string for string-boxing and setting up a car. No other cheap substitute.
Great drawings. Lots of power and rpm data, lots of diagrams of aero and mechanical details. The only thing missing is the maths but it's not a book based on that. Most of it describes the evolution of each team car during the year: aero packages, rpm limit rise, steering wheels, controls, brakes, exhausts etc.

If you want to find a job i reckon this can be quite useful along with an engineering degree and some industrial experience.
