4.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive for the Indian subcontinent., 11 Jun 2009
I gave 4 stars, not because this book (actually 2 books) is not worth five, but because the splits of subspecies supposed by the author are sometimes a little optimistic, so this book can still be better (but time will tell what has to change). All that splitting of subspecies has resulted in new birdnames, so this guide can be a little confusing for those that relied on the Inskipp pocket guide (which is still excellent value, by the way). One drawback is that the in-debt information is so extensive and heavy to take with you while travelling.

I found recognizing birds in the field very easy, the drawings are excellent, and part one (the field guide) is a joy to rely on in the field. The maps are very good, and so is the (very short) information about habitat. I recommend using this guide together with A birdwachters' guide to India (www.amazon.co.uk/Birdwatchers-Guide-India-Prion/dp/1871104084).
