5.0 out of 5 stars Diez puntos, 25 May 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: El Tunel: El Tunel (Paperback)
This book can be read for two main reasons: for the excellent insight on porteño life, and also for its insightful treatment of the human condition. It was so incredibly easy for Juan Pablo to fall from the position of normality to murder withing the course of a relatively short novel. His jealousy, the way his mind worked, the paranoia, the obvious obsession with María. It is hard to know who to feel most sorry for, for all of the principal characters are flawed and unhappy in many ways. The subject is masterfully takled by Sábato, and is a great introduction to his other works, as to other Argentine literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can get deseperated reading this book, 11 Oct 1997

This review is from: El Tunel (Paperback)
It's hard to explain how Juan Pablo Castell feels after the killing onf María Iribarne, the only think that I could say is that you'll never understand this masterpiece of Ernesto Sabato untill you read it at least twice. It's a wonderfull show of the power of writing. And again, you'll see Maria's housband being blind, and as always, Ernesto plays with the blindness. I can't keep asking me why :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars No doubt one of the greatest novels in south american lit., 2 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: El Tunel (Paperback)
This is a "tour-de-force" if you are intrested in South American Literature. All I can say is that Sabato is among the greatest spanish speaking novelists along with Garcia Marquez (Colombia), Vargas LLosa (Peru), Cortazar and Borges (Argentina). Sabato has a sharp insight into contemporary society and into the inner struggle of a hiper-sensitive protagonist that (I dare say) is trapped by society and himself. The author has the capability, not only, to laugh at and critize society and things wich people normaly overlook about it, but to also laugh at the protagonist. One of the most gripping styles I have seen. The insight into the human condition and behaiviour is wonderful. A must read!
