Grimsby Telegraph, 11 February 2004
"...gripping and brilliantly researched book - and a must for anyone who enjoys sea dramas or just a good yarn".

Book Description
On the eve of its centenary, this book brings to light for the first time in English one of modern history's most overlooked, yet significant, maritime disasters. The Norge was a Danish emigrant ship which, en route from Copenhagen, Christiania (Oslo) and Christiansand to New York, carrying Scandinavian and Russian-Jewish emigrants, struck a reef near Rockall, west of Scotland, and sank in 20 minutes on the morning of 28 June 1904. 635 people perished, and the 160 survivors spent up to 8 days in open lifeboats without anyone knowing about the shipwreck. Being a typical emigrant steamer, 240 of the passengers were children, only 30 of whom survived. Although licensed to carry 800 people the Norge had lifeboats for only 251, a diabolical statistic which was similarly repeated during the Titanic disaster only eight years later.

Along with 180+ b/w pictures, this book takes the reader on a journey through the background of the ship and company, passenger stories, inspections of the vessel, the disaster itself, the several harrowing days in lifeboats, the rescue and landings at Grimsby, Stornoway, Aberdeen and the Faeroes, the aftermath, investigation and ensuing lawsuit, relief fund and much more. Also included is the most complete Norge passenger and crew list available. The wreck of the Norge was located in July 2003.

'One of the world's most calamitous occurrences in the annals of modern shipping'
