5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book for those starting off Tibetan., 3 Dec 2001
By A Customer
I picked this up while i was staying in a Tibetan monastery in Nepal and faced with the daily confusion of wondering what was going on! The book gives a clear approach to the pronunciation of the Tibetan languange with an excellent phonetic system. The section on Tibetan alphabet and how to write and read it is very well set out. The Sanscritised part of the alphabet is also explained in detail and examples of Buddhist scriptures are quoted and reproduced both phonetically and in script. It is clear the author is a most experienced languange teacher, the complexities of grammar are represented in a manner that should help the more deductive learner rather than the old fashioned exhaustive and exhausting structural approach. All the language examples are useful phrases and the book provides a really valuable grounding in what is, for most of us, a pretty hard language to approach without a teacher. There are tapes available too and a second volume of the course is also available through Amazon. Are they going to make the tapes available too? Let's hope so. Tashi dheleg!
