4.0 out of 5 stars Opening a window into the language of Tibetan speakers, 23 May 2002
Although the first print of this book was many years in the past, don't let this put you off. A tightly packaged guide and introduction to colloquial spoken tibetan that gives you enough to be able to understand the structure and language of Tibetan. Whilst there is a tibetan saying that there are as many dialects as there are lamas - the short but essential vocabulary supplies one with variations based on Lhasa district dialect and that spoken in Central Tibet.
A readily available phrase list provides a base for reading the various mathematics of the grammar into, and if you ever find yourself short of things to say in Tibetan there are plenty of phrases here to bring humour to your conversation (for example how to explain to say to someone they are three days late and have not brought the butter you requested, in one simple sentence!)
If you can laugh of the, perhaps imperial and stilted style in which this material is presented, you have got all the makings for grasping a language we all hope will live on for years.
A final point to note, for all would be tibetan speakers, additionally arm yourself with a good tibetan-english dictionary - the technical instructions in this book on grammar are so detailed you will be wanting to construct your own phrases that go beyond," Put the kettle on the fire, I wish to have some more tea!"
