3.0 out of 5 stars Probably best for Czech users, 24 April 2002
By A Customer
I am familiar with the 1994 edition of this work, so it is possible that material changes have been made in the present edition. However, I hope my impressions are of help.

The dictionary is clearly based on extensive reading by the compilers, and a particular strength is the number of phrases and idioms in both languages that are translated within the entry for a relevant headword.

Czech grammatical information is not given except for imperfective-perfective verb pairs (in the Czech-English only) - genders, declensions and conjugations are not given - whereas there is a list of English irregular verbs. In the English-Czech section, different senses (in Czech) of a single English word are generally only numbered and not explained in English. The Czech-English occasionally gives English terms which may not be in common usage - eg "borrow till St Tib's Eve". Quite a few Czech-English entries simply refer the user to a Czech synonym.

I can't compare it with comparable works, as the only other dictionaries I have used are pocket-sized. While primarily intended for Czech learners, it does make Czech literature accessible to the English-speaking learner of Czech where a smaller dictionary would be inadequate.
