4.0 out of 5 stars Quatermass lookalike !, 17 Nov 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: X The Unknown [DVD] [1956] (DVD)
This is a British scifi film of the Quatermass type and I believe that Hammer did actually want to call the main character Professor Quatermass, only to have Nigel Kneale refuse permission. It follows the "realistic" British style of the era and manages to build up tension very well. There's the usual sprinkling of stock characters - the tramp, the gormless soldier, a small child in danger etc - but this doesn't detract from the storyline at all. I can recommend this film to anyone who enjoys old scifi - and it is several cuts above the monster movies being churned out by Hollywood around the same time. You will find the scientific equipment dated, but overall this is a fun film to watch.

Made to cash in on the successful The Quatermass Experiment released the previous year, this is a rather good old fashioned horror flick. Very atmospheric, haunting, and gory at times too. Witness the scene in the laboratory when the doctor, well, just see it and you will know what I mean. Dean Jagger portrays a Quatermass type of scientist (there is a rumour that the studio wanted to use Quatermass's name but Nigel Kneale politely declined.) who battles the unseen monster from the earth's centre. Much action and suspense along the way, culminating in the final scenes which leave the viewer on the edge of his seat. Picture and sound are quite good, and the disc is enhanced with extras such as interviews with Jimmy Sangster.

3.0 out of 5 stars good idea, shame about the production., 4 Dec 2003

The plot at the centre of this is a fairly good one, as far as vintage b-movie sci-fi's go. It is that an ancient energy below the surface of the Earth is coming up the surface, feeding on radiation, and melting people it comes into contact with. So far so very Quatermass, unfortunately it lacks the style of the Quatermass films of the same era. There are no charismatic actors to carry the story, (a la Peter Cushing or Andrew Keir), instead we are left with some fairly wooden unknowns. The eccentric scientist, (who seems to carry out important dangerous experiments in a garden shed!) who sets out to save the day makes little impact. And the actor who plays his frightfully important boss is none other than the Mr Grimsdale of the Norman Wisdom films, which made it all feel a bit odd to say the least!

There is the odd Gothic touch about this, such as the ruined tower on the marshes which makes a good diversion. Other than that we are left with scientists getting defensive about the A-bomb ("We don't want to destroy, only create"), and extremely cheap and cheerful special effects, plus an absolutely laughable scene supposedly meant to be set in the highly secure radiation room of a hospital, and which is in effect a broom cupboard with "keep out" on the door, which the doctors and nurses use for their heavy petting!!! Old British sci-fi's are always well worth a look, but this isn't one of the better ones.
