HASH(0x9bfeea38) out of 5 stars I love bad movies 6 Aug. 2012

What can I say?
It's a low budget production with few redeeming qualities. Unlike other great "turkeys" it doesn't have the redeeming characteristics of "Plan Nine From Outer Space" or "Robot Monster".
I purchased this because I know the actor who played the cop, at the end of the film, (Jim Ferro) and he had begged me not to look for it.

I am still trying to relate the opening sequence (where the teens were stabbed by the rapier wielding killer) to the body of the Movie. Jim finally told me that the director added that sequence when he learned that Jim had studied Fencing in college. I guess if you've got a skill, use it. Even if it has no reason to be in the movie.

HASH(0x9bc726c0) out of 5 stars In the dark, no one can see you leave the theater 17 Aug. 2001

The original cover of this teen slasher epic featured a close up of a guy with a plastic bag tight around his head, his mouth wide open in terror. The caption read: Tonight....their cries will fall on dead ears.
I would much prefer that cover, because the current one had a picture of the house where this "night of terror" took place, and one of the character....who have an expression on his face like someone had put something up where the sun don't shine. The caption this time reads: In the dark...no one can see you scream.
Or leave the theater for that matter.
Night Screams like a typical teen slasher movie in which you watch to do the body count. And the body count in this flick reaches double digits.
As if that is not enough, the film started with this ill fated couple watching a horror film in which nubile females are offed by a fencing sword. Perhaps they are going for triple digits?
Anyway, basically, David, the high school football hero who have to take medication for hyperactivity decided to invite some friends over to his parent's palatial home when they went out to dinner (and it must be a loooooong dinner). And guess what, someone started to knock off the party goers, and in true slasher fashion, everything on the list is used: axe to head, electrocution, poison gas, strangulation, plastic bag suffocation...and yes, even the reliable knife in the back. And of course, in between killings, we get to watch David's parents wine and dine and started to get suspicious when they couldn't get through to the house via telephone.
And like all slasher movies, this one also have a twist ending....and everybody amazingly stupid. Like the guy who was suffocated with a plastic bag. Why didn't he just rip it off with his TWO HANDS?
Ultimately, Night Screams is standard fare....the acting is average (okay, so it is not Shakespeare), the gore effects is okay. But it is not a scary movie, it is very predicatable and you know when somebody is about to "get it". But if you are in for a film with a high body count, this one is it.

HASH(0x9bde39a8) out of 5 stars Does it actually deserve to be called a movie? 14 Oct. 2012

The short answer to my own question is, simply, no. I've loved cheap little movies my entire life - slasher films, Charlie Chan mysteries (even the later ones from Monogram), blaxploitation pieces riffing on Dracula and Frankenstein - but somehow this one manages to manifest none of the virtues an accepting viewer can readily find in the folk art of the exploitation cheapie. No energy (not even the vibrantly juvenile sexual energy that pervades your average slasher film). No affection for its chosen genre. No feeling at all for place, for people, for conversation. And most damning of all - no ingenuity whatsoever in getting around the logistical and mechanical limitations of making a low-budget movie. As a Wichitan, I'd love to love this; or at least be able to place it in my personal time capsule as a charming piece of trash. But the loveless cynicism of the so-called filmmakers makes that impossible. If I sound offended, perhaps it is because I am. Laziness offends me; smirkiness offends me. For God's sake, life is short so why not be passionate about what you do? What makes horror special is that its fans know how to appreciate the small scale, the cheap, the random, the accidental. We love that little shack that a production assistant built in the woods in "Friday the 13th: Pt. 2" or the way Mrs. Voorhees has big hairy man hands when she gets decapitated in the original film. We, to paraphrase Edward Hopper, just like the way light lies on a wall...or on a tattered screen in a soon-to-be-bulldozed shopping mall. We take what we can get and we usually find a way to love it. But not this time.

HASH(0x9bbd1c0c) out of 5 stars Dry Cheese ! 18 Feb. 2006
By creatureart - Published on Amazon.com

'NIGHT SCREAMS' is somewhere between 'Splatter University' & 'Cheerleader camp' on the most CHEE*Z'ST slasher film of all times list. A hardcore slasher fan might want to give this one a viewing but all others beware for this cheese is a little to dry.

HASH(0x9bd2d7f8) out of 5 stars WORTHWILE BUT DISJOINTED 1 April 2005

This movie did not flow like a smooth river. The ending was a bit confusing. Who did David's girlfriend kill and who did the convict kill? Some of the way too many murders were too corny. It is naturally hard to make a good slasher flick anyway with a male as the main victim. The movie did not inform us that the police officer who stopped David's parents had ESP, since they never told him where they lived, yet he led them home. Aside from mastering murdering poetry, the male killer obviously did not master basic acting. Aside from all the negatives though, this movie was entertaining. One negative was also a positive-a male hero is unique for this genre. But it takes the correct ingredients of writing, directing, storyline and climactic struggle for life and death that lasts more than ten seconds. Not a must but, but it is worth watching.
