5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous phantom, 11 Dec 2007
By eygaliere (ireland) - See all my reviews
The legend of the phantom is brought to life by the wonderful charles dance( the phantom) and the distinguished burt lancaster( retiring director of the opera)...no offence to andrew lloyd webber intended...but i enjoyed this version much more than the live theatre version!...the musical score is spectactular utilising the best moments of 'faust' to great effect. We are drawn back in time to the paris of old where deep poverty and fabulous wealth co-exist...the young and impoverished christine finds work in the paris opera house where her talents are discovered by the phantom who hears her voice from his hiding place deep below opera house, he nurtures her talent and she gets her lucky break gaining a position in the opera company...watch out for the jealous carlotta!.....in the end we learn that the phantom is more to be pitied than to be feared.....enjoy !

5.0 out of 5 stars A lush, sincere adaptation of the classic story, 6 Jun 2009
By Mrs. I. Martin - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have seen no less than six versions of the Phantom story (including the 2004 Webber one) and I must say this one is my favourite of them all - yes, it beats even the fantastic musical with Gerard Butler! Erik, the Phantom is a far more tragic figure in this version, because he is not an insane, blood-thirsty maniac but someone who fully realises the truth of his existence and accepts it without loud curses to God but with sad resignation. Christine is a much stronger character, in a way closer, I felt, to the Leroux's novel, than in any other adaptations I've seen. Something else I enjoyed greatly was the opera snippets - Norma, La Traviata and Faust, performed brilliantly (apart from when Carlotta sings, of course) by classically trained singers.

Yes, Kopit has taken some liberties with the script, yes, he gives the Phantom a father who loves him in his own way and a mother to whom his face was 'flawlessly perfect,' yes, instead of Raoul it's Phillipe who falls in love with Christine and yes, the Daaes have much humbler peasant origins, but the beauty of the tragic story doesn't suffer in the least from those changes. If anything, they make it even more poignant. The ending is beautiful, heart-wrenching and very symbolic - the denouement happens on the roof of the opera and not down in the cellars, elevating the character of Erik and his pure love, instead of plunging it down in madness and obsession. Don't let the less than crystal-clear quality of the recording (after all, it was shot in 1990 and for TV) put you off, it's a brilliant gem of an adaptation and more than worth adding to your collection.

A little trivia snippet - as far as I know it's the only version of Phantom which was shot on location in Opera Garnier (everything apart from the auditorium shots), and in a real underground lake.
