Kilmer/Shue ~ Saint

Kilmer makes a suitably dashing hero but is a little too fresh faced in the role for my liking. Having said that, the back story to Simon Templar goes some way to telegraph our hero's motivation as the saint of the title. The two leads look great together and their relationship is well defined. High production values meant that no expense was spared on the superb sets and locations. The interesting plot involves a corrupt Russian oligarch and the search for a free energy source, the direction is lively and not without humour. The villian isn't as ruthless as I would've liked and the Saint's penchant for not using weapons is it's only downfall when compared to similar themed movies.

This movie is a wonderful piece of escapism, pure and simple and as such, it's a great film.
Although the Simon Templar we see in the film isn't the one we've come to recognise through the literature and other movies, he is still a very likeable character in his own right.
A master of disguise, thief and all round ladies man, Simon Templar takes a job to steal the formula for cold fusion from a professor so that he can retire on the money that he'll make from the job.
All goes well until he meets the professor and finds her to be a young beautiful woman. He falls for her and decides not to steal the formula from her but the person who hired him threatens to kill her if he doesn't complete the job as planned.
So, he takes the formula and from then on he does his best to keep one jump ahead of everyone using high tech equipment and pure good luck as well as trying to stop the cold fusion formula getting into the wrong hands.
Does he get the girl? The ending will not disappoint.
There are three steps to becoming a saint - he may falter along the way but eventually he takes them. Great piece of evening's entertainment after a hard at work when you just want relax.

Picture the usual Saint format - Rich handsome man, fast car, fighting the evil criminal and always gets the girl. All that is here in Val Kilmers characterisation of the "The Saint" but this time we get to see a little deeper into the character of the man beneath the smooth veneer. The opening scenes begin with a small boy in a seemingly dark and forbidding Catholic orphanage, and you can easily discern from his treatment how he is very much a tortured a soul - nightmares of his childhood haunt him through the plot. Not so much a man brave and fearless, but driven by the pain of his past, the need to try and escape the hurt as well as stay ahead of the game. Add to this a generous sprinkling of state of the art James Bond gadetry, plus the added bonus of witnessing Val Kilmer as a master of disguise - changing both accent and appearance where the need arises and you have an extremely watchable and entertaining film. One of the things that make this a very interesting film is that despite learning a little more about The Saint's life he remains very much an enigma, maybe even to himself, where in one scene he stares long and hard into the mirror running through different accents, perhaps as though even he is asking himself who he really is at times. This constant undercurrent throughout the film is what helps to generate interest and leave the viewer wondering as to who The Saint in fact really is.
Val Kilmer has shown himself to be an extremely fine and versatile actor. I think if the producers want to have another weighty trip to the bank then a sequel to this with Val Kilmer (perhaps to develop the character of The Saint to an even greater extent) wouldnt go amiss. James Bond fans enjoy!

On the coat tails of the reimagined Mission impossible and the rebooted James Bond, this late 1990's espionage thriller starring Val Kilmer should perhaps have faired better than it did critically and in terms of box office.

This is a mixed, but enjoyable bag of romance and action thriller, from director Philip Noyce, the man responsible for Clear and Present Danger among others.

Val plays the Saint an anti hero, a thief and master of disguise, who whilst on a job falls for his prey, the beautiful Elizabeth Shue, a doctor with a theory on nuclear fusion, harnessing unlimited energy, who falls prey to Russian mafia types who want to steal the formula.

His job should be simple, but romance blossoms.

This is nearly a great film, but squanders chances on stupid disguises, long talky scenes and just a little too little action.

Thoughtful yes, action packed, not compared to other rivals, this film does contain excellent performances from all the cast, is stylishly filmed, and has a brilliant sound track.

Worth a watch definatly and much more romantic than many action blockbuster's, but has an uneven pace at times, that detracts from some of the stronger scenes, so not bad but not great, a mixed bag.

This is a very strange film about a very unusual saint. This saint is neither a saint nor a hero, but merely an unprincipled young man who robs and seduces for money, under the rather thin excuse that he had an unpleasant childhood as an orphan in China. Didn't we all? Nevertheless, your unsaintly critic managed to suspend his disbelief for a very pleasantly entertaining hour or two, to forget any notion of critical acumen as wholly inapplicable to this wonderfully implausible Hollywood extravaganza, and to sit back and enjoy the ride. Thrill to the beautiful and breathless Elisabeth Shue, the true saint of the story, an impossibly naive scientist who has discovered the secret of how to energise the entire world from a bucket of water! Marvel as she exchanges her virginally white laboratory overall for the seductive leather of the professional spy! Wonder at the villainy of the professional villains, who are about to take over Mother Russia and return it to the days of Ivan the Terrible! Gasp at the variety of disguises of ... Enough. It's a film. I enjoyed it. So will you. And if you don't, the Saint will come and haunt you, in the guise of your old history teacher...
