Being a reasonably voracious viewer of cult flicks and trash-cinema 'classics', I set my sights on the legendary (?!) Troma mo-pic Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD. After checking it out, I'm sorry to say I was rather disappointed. Now I know Troma™ flicks tend to be silly are not to be taken seriously, but the kimono-clad sarge's misadventures were a bit too dumb even for my low cinematic standards! Sure, it had a few moments of brilliance (such as the "executive shoe-shine" scene and Kabukiman's first use of his bizarre powers against a gang of muggers in Central Park), but it was counter-balanced by really corny dialogue (the "you don't have your super-hero learner's permit yet" line was a real groaner), a few dumb sight gags (our hero turning one of the mugger-gang members into a pile of weenies, for example), and the most anticlimactic super-hero/super-villain battle I've ever seen (the one in the Spider-Man flick is a close second). There's even a scene transition that was shamelessly ripped off from Spaceballs ("nice dissolve...") that's just a little less unfunny here than it as the first time 'round. Most of the side features, including a short promo for the never-developed Kabukiman 'toon show and the sarge caught in a sexual harassment suit instigated by the movie's simian star were pretty retarded, too.
But this presentation did have one saving grace: Lloyd Kaufman's feature-length commentary track. He threw out several entertaining anecdotes about the production of the flick, explanations of how certain sequences were shot, and real-life events that inspired some of the scenes. He even gets political during the last several minutes of the feature, letting the listener in on his conspiracy theory regarding the news media and the corporate elite.

This is the Movie only for the B-movie lovers. It is like,,,one of those super hero story, but it is from Troma,so not like those major hollywood super hero type film such as@x-men,superman etc. story is about the cop in N.Y.P.D investigates the marder of Japanese Kabuki actor, and then got the power of unusuall hero "Kabukiman".And then he is going to fight against the evil with super weapon such as Fatal Sushi, lethal chopsticks! Well,do not expect anything like major film, such as great acting, great scenes created by spending lots of money,,,,it is low budget film with Troma taste. And if you can not take the humor of B-movie,do not watch it,but I really recommend it to all the bad-movie,or B-movie lovers. This is the Good trash! By the way,US edition is a couple of minutes longer, and it is disappointing they cut the movie quite often in europe.... That`s why I can not give 5 stars. But if it was original length,I`d give 5 stars as one of the Best B-movie!!

Sgt kabukiman could have been a contender, he really could have.I love really bad b movie trash films and this was one of the first i saw, luckily they got better.

Its not that the film is bad per say.It has some great scenes, like when harrys learning his new powers, or when he keeps getting his transformations wrong and turning into a clown!

But because the film was financed by a japenese company in the off chance of a series for kids its a mixed bag.Troma have tried to appeal to both audiences but have instead alienated both. Its to violent for children but not gorey or silly enough for fans of troma movies. So its stuck in between.
