4.0 out of 5 stars not for the beginner!, 8 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This is an historically important book. Effectively it is the technique guide to the original aikido which Ueshiba taught (more similar to aikijitsu). It covers an enormous amount of techniques. It is as it was originally written (though now in English). i.e. simple line diagrams and extremely brief instructions for the technique (about 3-4 terse sentances). Unless you are very familiar with aikido you will gain absolutely nothing from these. However I found it interesting as it showed me the early structure of learning techniques in aikido, and why so many techniques have been removed or adapted from this repertoire.

Don't buy this unless you want it for historical reasons or are at least a 1st Dan. (This book will not teach you anything about self-defence and is unlikely to improve your aikido).

3.0 out of 5 stars A good historical reference, 30 Jul 2002
By A Customer
This is a good historical document into aikido techniques as taught by O'sensei (M. Ueshiba) in the pre-war era. The hand-drawings that shows the techniques (about 3 drawings for each technique) are surprisingly good, but it still takes a solid background in aikido to decipher what is actually going on (and why...).
The book shows array of techniques that are very seldom taught in aikido classes today, but nevertheless are of interest to the aikidoka that wants to see the wide variety that was taught by O'sensei. I find it well worth having in my martial arts library, but it is probably of no interest to other than aikido and aiki-jutsu students.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need this and Budo: Teachings of the founder, 15 Oct 2004
By A Customer
These are two books that'll help you understand pre-war Akido or Aiki-budo as it was then known.

4.0 out of 5 stars Technical Handbook,
This is the first book written by Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. This was intended as a technical manual for his students and not for those outside the Dojo. Read more
