This book is absolutely brilliant! It uses pictures relating to the kana to help you learn much faster. With this book I learnt all the kana in one evening and I still remember them a year later! This is definitely the book to get if you want to learn kana quickly, it also has writing practice for each kana.

I recommend this book to anyone learning Japanese kana script. It is very well presented with pictures to help you remember the shapes of both hiragana and katakana. However there are a couple of odd representations for some of the sounds. For example "ha" is represented by a HOckey player and "ho" is a farmer with a hat and a HOe. I personally would have done them the other way round.

Leant the kana (hiragana and katakana) so quickly with this book (a few days with jet lag) - works especially well if you have a visual memory and learn best with pictorial representation, also caters for aural prompts by the sounds (although has been suggested by other reviewers some are a little "imaginative"). But they do work and that is the essential thing. 12 years on and I still remember most of the pictures representing the kana (and all the kana as well) and for someone not using them daily I think that speaks volumes. Easily the best book for learning kana that I have come across.
