Product Description

Product Description
Along with its sister volume (Kodansha's Furigana Dictionary: English-Japanese), this dictionary aims to be a standard and invaluable reference source for Japanese language students. It comprises 16,000 entries representing the most commonly used words, and is illustrated with 50,000 sample sentences. All kanji include phonetic "furigana" to enhance accurate pronunciation, along with guidance on grammar, syntax, style, pronunciation, common collations, deriviatives and compounds. The dictionary has also been extensively cross-referenced to make the user aware of common synonyms and antonyms, clarifying both meaning and usage.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST dictionary for beginning to intermediate students, 18 Mar 1999
By A Customer
As a North American living and working in Tokyo for the past three years, it was inevitable that I'd come to study Japanese. After learning hiragana and katakana (the foundation for further language studies), I soon realized I needed a good dictionary to help build my vocabulary.

Unfortunately, all of the dictionaries I found were either "romanized" (a step backwards once kana has been learned), lacking an adequate base of intelligent vocabulary, or filled with advanced kanji intended for native speakers.

I was thrilled to find this excellent "furigana" dictionary by Kodansha. Furigana (small kana printed above the kanji entries which allow even beginning students to read the Chinese characters) has been provided for each entry. This was exactly what I'd been looking for.

The 14,000-word basic vocabulary has proven a great starting point for my studies, and I've come to rely on this book as a vital supplement for conversation, homework and continuing studies. Sensical definitions in clear English, along with sample sentences in modern Japanese makes this dictionary indispensible. The publisher's companion volume, "Kodansha's Furigana Japanese-English Dictionary," is also highly recommended. Both books feature a basic grammar explanation and useful index containing "counters" and other related information.

In Tokyo, I was able to get the 1998 and 1997 editions, respectively, for each volume, and they're both soft cover editions--a plus over the hard cover versions. Overall, a must have for all beginning to intermediate students of Japanese.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great method to learning a difficult language!, 29 Aug 1998
By A Customer
I can't stress enough how helpful 'furigana' is to learning and implementing Japanese. These small superscripts will give you the phonetic pronunciation in one of the two Japanese alphabets above Kanji (Chinese pictogram characters) which have no intrinsic pronunciation. This is key to anyone desiring to not only to read, but to speak Japanese. These books were purchased for me while I was in Japan by a Japanese woman who knew exactly what works best for students studying Japanese. 'Furigana' is often seen in children's books. It is the method native speakers use to learn their language. The vocabulary in these dictionaries is that of the average junior highschool student, and may seem limited. However by virtue of their modern method and content these dictionaries are a few cuts above every other I have encountered (especially so called 'romaji.') These two(the English-Japanese and Japanese-English) are beautifully bound, superbly printed dictionaries. I couldn't recommend them more highly to anyone setting out to learn Japanese the right way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic !!!, 21 Nov 2004
By E. Coldridge-Holmes (Crewe, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I, like many other people learning Japanese, am constantly confronted by Romanji (Japanese written in English characters) the problem is that this doesn't allow you to really progress with your learning as it is an 'easier option', if you have learned how to read/write in Japanese then books written in romanji are a step backwards.

Finally, a dictionary written in Furigana (Hiragana/Katakana the small characters written beside or above Kanji characters to help you pronounce them) this gives you great practise in reading Japanese and reinforces your knowledge of Japanese characters and the way that their alphabet is written.

In order to use and make the most of this dictionary, you must be able to read Hiragana/Katakana which is actually REALLY easy even for complete beginners !

Definitely worth buying, I've only had this book for about 2 months and it's already very worn because I reffer to it so often. Learning Japanese ? ~ you NEED this dictionary !!!
