Every judoka will want a copy of this book!!!, 15 Jan 2001

I found this book one of the most interesting and informative books to come onto the judo scene for many years - a book that I believe every judoka will want in his/her library.'The Father of Judo' is, in fact, a biography of Jigoro Kano. It is indeed the first time that the life story of Jigoro Kano has been printed in the English language, and until now, only excerpts have been translated from the Japanese writings. The book's author, Brian Watson, is the English correspondent for the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo, and his own distinguished judo career stretches back many years, having gained his 4th Dan black belt at the Kodokan in Tokyo back in the 1960's. In addition, the book contains a comprehensive record of the All Japan Judo Championship results from 1948 to the year 2000; the World Judo Championship results from 1956 to 1999; and the Olympic Games judo results from 1964 to 1996. All weight categories are covered, and all individuals are named. It is extremely pleasant and easy to read, and a very very interesting book all round. I think it deserves all the praise it can be given, and most certainly won't disappoint its reader. Colin C. Draycott, 6th Dan Vice President, British Judo Association
