I bought this as a christmas present but liked it so much had to get one for myself. The photos are extremely vivid and reach out to you straight away. They give you a glimpse of a very different but very real world not normally seen. Nan Goldin, once again, unmissable.

For anyone not familiar with Nan Goldin's work, this would be a perfect place to start.

Her photos have caused controversy for decades, like the work of her contemporary Cindy Sherman, including being censored at the saatchi gallery. Many would call her portrayals of friend's sexual activities pornography which is true to some extent, but her work has a beauty to it not found in dirty magasines. This book centers on pictures of her friends - transvestites, gays, prostitutes and transsexuals, and treats the subject matter sensitively. Instead of making these people a freak show as would be so easy to do, she captures the beauty and personalities behind the make up, and produces some amazing work.
