5.0 out of 5 stars Superb value...breathtaking pictures, 22 Dec 1999
I bought this book on the recommendation of Autosports magazine... This book is amazing value. Physically very large and heavy. Packed with quality photos of all the great drivers of the period, on and off the track. The captions for each photo are in English, French and German and tend to clutter the presentation but I can forgive this minor irritation thanks to the sheer quality of the content. Anyone interested in this period of motor racing should check out this book...it really is a stunning (and poignant) visual record of the era!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why no credit for the photographer?, 12 Nov 2002

Sure, Lehbrink wrote the text for this hypnotically brilliant book but the reason for buying it is Rainer Schlegelmilch's wonderfully crisp black and white photography. Superb reproduction of images from the days when racing was a sport - character studies, action shots, casual snaps taken in pits and paddock; they're all here. The book largely consists of photo-essays on individual drivers - the pictures are given space to breathe, look magnificent and repay close attention. A coffee table book that'll spend more time being looked at than on your coffee table - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get it ... if you can ..., 1 Jan 2005
By A Customer
Simply for the photographs alone, buy this book if you can. Rainer Schlegelmilch is one of the most renowned motorsport photographers and the selection in this book, and his other books show why - he's an artist who paints in light.

The photographs shown in this selection are all in black and white but they all convey alot of drama and atmosphere. Taken when photographers could get close to the cars on the track and in the paddocks they show most of what there was to see in the 1960s.

I hate to be a photography student and analyse everything but, I'm going to anyway. Schlegelmilch doesn't seem to stick to the traditional and well-established photographing stations of the time - indeed plenty of these shots show groups of photographers huddled together on the same piece of turf. The angle and the use of light are the keys to what makes these great, not how close he was to the subject.

*These images show everything that's wrong with modern motorsport photography in all it's 10m zoom lens glory.*

You're most likely to find this in a specialist motorsport books tent at somewhere like Goodwood if what I gathered from this page is that availability is a bit hit or miss with this.
