Synopsis
Sigmar Polke is an artist who eludes stylistic categorization. His ironic, iconoclastic approach to pictorial content, materials and techniques exposes stereotypes, parodies shallowness and shakes the foundations of customary patterns of vision and thought. Although his work is represented in a number of public and private collections, exhibitions have tended to focus largely on isolated aspects of his diverse oeuvre. This volume presents the art of Sigmar Polke in its entirety, demonstrating how, with technical skill and a love of experimentation, Polke has developed a unique visual language. The book features essays by Hans Belting, Rudi Fuchs, Charles W. Haxthausen, Martin Hentschel and others. It offers more than 200 works presenting all the artist's creative periods and each of the genres in which he has worked, beginning with his earliest pieces in 1962 and including previously unpublished works completed between 1995 and 1997.
